The Ghana Police Service’s forty (40) Chief Inspectors have filed a lawsuit against Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, the IGP, over what they claim is the unjustified denial of their promotion.
As a result of the Service’s decision to provide special amnesty to police personnel who had earned degrees before 2020 after they had enlisted in the service, the police officers contend they have been disqualified from a number of promotions in a writ filed at the Kumasi High Court.
Despite having between 25 and 30 years of service, the officers claim that the police administration elevated their junior colleagues under the same amnesty but refused to admit them to the police academy to allow their promotions to Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP).
Therefore, the 40 plaintiffs are asking the court to force the IGP to give them direct access to the Police Academy and to further compensate them for their lost income as a result of not being promoted.
A parliamentary committee is questioning the IGP and three other top police officials about a recording that was leaked and shows the police plotting the ouster of the IGP.
The IGP has previously appeared before the committee along with his accusations.
The committee will resume meeting on October 2, 2023, after a hiatus.
