According to a survey performed by the Ghana Police Service’s Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) for July 2023, road accidents climbed by 4.31 percent.
Road traffic fatalities climbed by 30.07 percent during the same time period.
In 2023, 1,233 collisions involving 2,099 cars were registered, with 186 people killed and 1328 wounded.
Crash reports, cars involved, fatalities, and injuries all climbed by 4.31%, 5.42%, 30.07%, and 8.76%, respectively.

In 2022, 1,182 collisions involving 1,991 cars were registered, with 143 people killed and 1221 wounded.
When compared to July 2022, pedestrian knockdowns decreased from 224 to 213 in July 2023.

From January through July 2023, a total of 8,137 traffic accidents were reported.
These accidents included 13,862 vehicles of various types (private, commercial, motorcycles/cycles, etc.) and 10,407 casualties (1,272 fatalities/deaths and 9,135 injuries).
Out of the 1,233 collisions recorded in July, 54% (670) were mild, 33% (405) were serious, and 13% (158) were fatal.
Similarly, 54% (4,364) of the 8,137 road traffic collisions reported from January to July 2023 were minor incidents, 33% (2,713) were serious crashes, and the remaining 13% (1,060) were fatal crashes.
Crash rates rose in nine of the sixteen areas.

Crashes increased by 300%, 180%, 150%, 122.2%, 88.4%, 33.3%, 29.9%, 15.4%, 5.6%, and 3.5% in July 2023 compared to the same time in 2022 in the Upper East, Ahafo, Upper West, Volta, Central, Eastern, Bono, Western North, and Ashanti regions. The North East region had little change, whereas the rest regions experienced declines during the same time period, with Savannah experiencing the greatest percentage fall by 90%.
Except for Pedestrian Knockdowns, all main metrics have increased for July 2023, whereas all significant indicators have decreased from January to July 2023 when compared to the same time in 2022.
