Cecilia Abena Dapaah, a former minister of sanitation and water resources, sacrificed for the New Patriotic Party by quitting following her stolen money incident, according to Franklin Cudjoe, president of IMANI Africa.
He claimed that the former minister shielded the party from any unanticipated embarrassment the NPP administration would experience.
The origin and intended use of the US$1 million, €300,000, and unidentified numbers of Ghanaian cedis that were allegedly taken from the minister’s home have drawn criticism from a number of organizations.
A story about two housekeepers who were prosecuted for allegedly stealing $1 million, $300,000 in euros, millions of Ghanaian cedis, and other personal items from Ms. Dapaah and her husband’s home went viral.
After the incident, Madam Dapaah gave up her ministerial position.
The Special Prosecutor eventually placed her under arrest, and two of the former minister’s homes were searched. Later, she was given bail.
Mr. Cudjoe stated the following in an interview on Citi TV about the Big Issue: “I think that the decision to resign was not only in her own interest, but she probably sacrificed for the entire party.
“When matters of this kind happen, the damage you are likely to suffer due to the information that is out there, if you don’t take care, you could break down. We are humans, especially if it’s really the case that you haven’t done anything wrong.”
He praised the previous minister for leaving his position honorably.
“Maybe some pressures made her resign. Ultimately, she made the decision that she could save some sanity, for now, while investigations continue. Her decision to resign was welcomed. I don’t fault her.”
