Patapaa Amisty, well known for his viral hit song “One Corner,” a Ghanaian musician, has alluded at the prospect of a supernatural curse being placed on Charterhouse, the organizers of the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA).
Patapaa spoke candidly on Hitz FM about his unhappiness at the 2018 VGMA, when he lost the prized Most Popular Song of the Year award to Fancy Gadam’s “Total Cheat.”
The musician, born Justice Amoah, said that he believed God had cast a curse on the VGMA organizers as a result of their acts during the awards event. He stated that he believed the supposed curse was punishment for causing him anguish throughout the event.
“I can see that God has placed a curse on the organizers of VGMA because of what they did to me. I don’t want to go far,” he pointed out during the interview.
Although Patapaa did not go into further detail, he did highlight that the concept of a curse in this context meant bearing penalties for causing harm to someone else. He chose not to elaborate further, but remained firm in his conviction.
Patapaa used the Amakye Dede scandal to back up his allegation during the interview. According to him, Amakye Dede was pressured into appointing Kuami Eugene as his successor despite his objections.
“I would want to use Amakye Dede’s issue as an example, but I don’t want to say it. They forced Amakye Dede to crown someone when he was not ready to do that,” Patapaa added.
Patapaa’s song was released in 2018. “One Corner” became viral, reaching audiences far beyond Ghana’s boundaries. Patapaa was disappointed to lose the VGMA despite being nominated among notable performers such as Ebony, KiDi, Kwami Eugene, Joe Mettle, and Captain Planet.
Patapaa openly lambasted the awards board after the VGMA loss, accusing them of accepting bribes to award artists who did not deserve to be recognized. His annoyance prompted him to promise not to accept any VGMA nominations in the future.
