Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi, Member of Parliament for the New Juaben South Constituency, has threatened to make commercial sex work activities unprofitable in Koforidua, the Eastern Regional capital.
According to the MP, who also serves as the Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry, the increase in commercial sex work operations in Koforidua has the potential to negatively corrupt the youth and tarnish the regional capital’s reputable image.
The MP made this pledge after approving a Koforidua District Police Command operation that resulted in the arrest of approximately 50 commercial sex workers, the most of whom are of Nigerian heritage, at prominent brothels and ghettos in the regional capital on saturday
Confirming the operation and arrest while addressing congregants at the Pentecost International Worship Center in Koforidua (PIWC-KOFORIDUA) over the weekend, Michael Kofi Okyere Baafi called on residents, particularly landlords, to volunteer information about commercial sex workers in their area so that the police can crack down on them.
“I directed the police to conduct an operation in town yesterday, and they began the first batch of operations, and we want to arrest all of the prostitutes who have come to town.” We were able to apprehend roughly 50 persons, and we will present them in court; 99 percent of them are Nigerians.”
“Prostitution in Koforidua will not be tolerated, and we urge you to refrain from engaging in it.”
