Staff at the Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) have vowed to strike if the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission does not reinstate their allowances. On Tuesday, May 23, GBC Divisional Union Chairman Samuel Nat Kevor requested the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission to rethink its decision to withhold allowances for personnel or face consequences.Employees are dissatisfied because they believe their hard work is not being appropriately recognized and rewarded as a result of the commission’s withholding of allowances.
Employees are wondering if the elimination of allowances is due to IMF restrictions to lower the salary bill.
Some GBC employees’ present salary will be reduced by 33% under the new arrangements.
The employee union has also demanded that the Commission’s Chief Executive Officer be fired.
In compliance with the FWSC Act of 2007, the Commission has begun a Nationwide Payroll Monitoring Exercise in collaboration with the Internal Audit Agency. It was determined throughout this operation that some GBC employees are receiving allowances they are not entitled to, such as rent, housing, utility, vehicle maintenance, and transportation allowances.
Mr. Kevor has warned that if their allowances are not recovered, they will resort to additional industrial action and legal action to get them removed.
