Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president, has informed the majority caucus of Parliament of his desire to run in the November NPP Presidential Primaries.
The majority of NPP MPs supported the Vice President’s action at the meeting on Tuesday night.
Dr. Bawumia is widely seen as the favorite to succeed President Akufo-Addo in 2024, but he will face competition from Alan Kyerematen, a three-time candidate who resigned in January of this year to concentrate on his bid for the presidency.
The NPP will choose a presidential candidate for the 2024 elections on November 4, 2023. Nine candidates have already stated their willingness to lead the party.
Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, a former minister of trade and industry, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, a former minister of food and agriculture, Kennedy Agyapong, an Assin Central MP, and Francis Addai Nimo are among the nine candidates.
Joe Ghartey, a former member of parliament for Essikado-Ketan, Kwabena Agyapong, a former general secretary of the NPP, Dr. Kofi Konadu Apraku, and Boakye Agyarko, a former energy minister, round out the group.
The NPP presidential primary nomination period will run from May 26 until June 24, 2023.
Additionally, the party declared that parliamentary primaries would take place in February 2024.
