The Accra Digital Center’s power was turned off by the Accra West regional taskforce of the Ghanaian electricity company because a debt of about GH600,000 was not paid. The operation is a part of a larger countrywide effort by ECG to recover money that consumers owe. This week is supposed to be the last for the National Exercise. As a result, the taskforce is actively organizing its funding.
According to Citi News sources, so far, GH2.5 billion has been made.“About GHS 25 million has been collected from our special load-tariff customers [in the Kaneshie area] which is quite substantial, and I hope that we will be able to give more details on the amount retrieved once the exercise is over. It is more frustrating dealing with customers who are owing but more difficult is realizing those who are engaging in illegal connections. We encourage people to pay for the power they use because we will clamp down on these illegalities”,
Fred Baimbil-Johnson is the Regional Public Relations Officer for Accra West.
To conduct similar drills, the crew is already traveling to the AirtelTigo office.
On March 20, 2023, the ECG began a massive income mobilization effort.
The corporation aims to recover an estimated GH5.7 billion in debt owed by various ministries, departments, and agencies, state-owned businesses, postpaid and prepaid clients nationwide.
Several state-owned businesses, such as Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), are connected to the national electricity system. Others include the public hospitals, schools, and Accra International Conference Center.
