The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has received the report from the committee entrusted with looking into the Kejetia New Market fire.
The committee advised, among other things, that the epicentre of the fire be closed indefinitely in its report, which was obtained by citinewsroom.com. This would allow for a more thorough evaluation of the fire’s damage and a check on the structural stability of nearby buildings.
One of the committee’s major conclusions was that “gas cylinders in the area of the fire that should not have been there” were present despite market fire safety precautions and laws.
Although they did their best to put out the fire, it nonetheless “caused severe damage to the structure of the fire-affected portion of the building,” it said, praising the rescue efforts made by emergency service providers such as the Ghana National Service.
As the market structure building’s upper portion suffered from severe smoke staining to the roof covering’s soffit, the flames damaged products and properties.
The incident caused damage to 42 shops, 12 of which had major damages, according to the study.
On March 15, a portion of the Kejetia New Market caught fire, damaging items worth thousands of Ghana Cedis.
Following a visit by a delegation from the Local Government Ministry, led by Osei Bonsu Amoah, a Committee was established on Friday, March 17. On the same day, the Ghana National Fire Service also started an inquiry into the fire occurrence.
The Committee’s major recommendations include renewing the mandatory building permission, the mandatory fire permit, and the mandatory EPA permit (mandatory).
