Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo is dissatisfied with the performance of Ghana’s consecutive governments since 1992.
Both the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) regimes, in her opinion, have failed to bring the country forward.
She also condemned both parties for undermining the nation’s norms and principles.
“I’ve been dissatisfied with every government we’ve had under this Constitution.
Because, after all of that, we went through with the military and everything, and we centered the Constitution as the guiding principle, at least, constitutionalism should have been what guided us, but we have destroyed so many norms and ideals.
“Yes, every government has failed us, not just the NPP government,” the former Supreme Court Justice stated in an interview with Joy News.
Between 2017 and 2019, Sophia Akuffo served as Chief Justice under President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
She recently joined pensioner bondholders in a protest at the Ministry of Finance to demand that their bonds be removed entirely from the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme.
Ghanaians reacted differently to her appearance, with some applauding her choice to stand up for regular Ghanaians and others, including NPP stalwart Gabby Asare Otchere Darko, criticizing her decision to picket.
Mr Otchere-Darko, a relative of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, said in a tweet that while he sympathizes with people picketing, he doesn’t understand why they want “to be exempted from a better offer program that is optional.”
“Why picket over an offer you have the option not to accept?” he questioned.
In reaction, the former Chief Justice called Mr Otchere-Darko a “disturbance” and stated that his opinions do not matter to her.
“He doesn’t determine for me what I need to do and what I don’t need to do, I don’t have time for stuff like that.
People like that aren’t essential to me or my life, and he’s a bother, that’s all I have to say about him,” Madam Akuffo told Citi News’ Charles Kumi.
