Residents of Accra have been forewarned by the Ghana Geological Survey Authority (GGSA) to brace themselves for further earth tremors in the future.
The GGSA claims that Accra is located in an earthquake zone and that periodic shocks of this nature are common in the area. Following two earth tremors that struck a portion of the nation, the Principal Seismologist at the GGSA said this in an interview with Citi News. According to him, occasional shocks of this kind should be expected in the area because Accra is situated in an earthquake zone.
This situation is not brand-new. The most recent ones were in 2018, 2019, and 2020, however, we have occasionally experienced this. Since Accra and the surrounding areas are located in earthquake-prone areas, we will occasionally experience mild tremors up until a large one happens, as we have been saying all along.
Opoku continued by saying that the Geological Survey Authority is currently evaluating the magnitude of the most recent earthquake and the country’s infrastructure’s ability to survive a severe earthquake in the future. We are unsure of how well our infrastructure can withstand a severe earthquake, which is why the Ghana Earthquake Committee was established to evaluate all the necessary steps that must be taken to secure our safety.
