The Ghana Police Service has placed a ten thousand cedis (GH10,000) bounty on the killers of two people who were shot during the 2020 general elections in Techiman South.
Following the arrival of a Police delegation led by the Director-General of Welfare, COP/Mrs. Habiba Twumasi-Sarpong paid a visit to the families of the eight victims of the shooting incident at the Techiman South constituency collation centre on Thursday, December 1, 2022.
According to the police, the delegation, which included the DG/Intelligence, the Regional Commander/BER, and the Director/Cold Case Unit, commiserated with the families once more and shared with them the progress made so far in the investigations into the incident.
The delegation visited each of the eight families in their homes in Techiman and assured them of the police’s determination to investigate each incident.
The families were told that, while investigations have yet to identify those responsible for the shooting, police are determined to pursue the case for as long as it takes until the perpetrators are brought to justice.
As a result, the case has been referred to the newly established Cold Case Unit, which is in charge of the ongoing review, investigation, and tracking of cases long after the trial appears to have concluded and public interest has waned.
The families were introduced to the unit’s Director, who has since begun working with them.
To aid the ongoing investigations, a reward of 100,000 Ghana Cedis (GH100,000) has been set aside for any member of the public who can provide credible information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the perpetrators.
Since its inception, the Cold Case Unit has revisited all major unsolved cases from the recent past and has been working with the affected families.
Violence
The Electoral Commission (EC) declared that Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) had won against Christopher Bayere Baasongti of the National Democratic Congress, causing chaos at the collation center (NDC). Both candidates had previously declared themselves the winners.
The violence resulted in the alleged firing of shots by security officials, resulting in the deaths of two people.
The confusion surrounding the election is far from over, as Bayere has filed an election petition in the High Court, challenging Korsah’s status as the validly elected MP.
Two people have been confirmed dead at Techiman Holy Family Hospital, and an unspecified number of people have been shot as a result of a shooting incident in the Techiman South constituency.
The deceased, whose names have not been released, were hit by stray bullets fired by police and military officers deployed to maintain law and order following the announcement of the parliamentary election results.
