Following their behavior after their final World Cup group match against Ghana, the Uruguayan football association and four players have been the subject of disciplinary action by Fifa. Uruguay defeated Ghana 2-0 but lost on goals scored, placing third in Group H behind South Korea.
At the end of the game, the Uruguayan players became enraged when the referee failed to give a penalty for a collision between Darwin Nunez and Alidu Seidu. They confronted him and appeared to be assaulting his assistant.
For violating Fifa’s disciplinary policy on offensive behavior and misbehavior, Jose Maria Gimenez, Edinson Cavani, Fernando Muslera, and Diego Godin could all face sanctions. The Uruguayan FA will be held accountable for the same code violations as well as one involving prejudice.
After the game, Valencia forward Cavani was caught on camera pushing over the pitchside monitor as he made his way down the tunnel, prompting ITV analyst Ian Wright to call him a “horrible guy.”
Regarding “incidents” that occurred during Serbia’s 3-2 loss to Switzerland in their final Group G match, Fifa has also begun proceedings against the Serbian FA. Although the events have not been identified, fans were instructed to “cease all discriminatory slogans and gestures” during the game. Fifa was already looking into Serbia after the players displayed a contentious flag of Kosovo in their locker room before their earlier tournament loss to Brazil.
