Ashley Young, an ex-England player, thinks booing Harry Maguire is “borderline bullying” and calls Gareth Southgate’s criticism “bullsh*t.”
The Aston Villa veteran wants England fans traveling to Qatar to support every single player on the team, including centre-back Maguire. Young believes his old Manchester United teammate has been unfairly mocked by supporters, but he has urged him to tune out the outside noise and focus on performing for England.
Young has also slammed Southgate’s detractors. He believes the manager’s record with the Three Lions speaks for itself and believes he is the best man to lead them to triumph in Qatar. “Gareth has made an impact since assuming leadership. These players will be well prepared,” he noted. “With the way the Euros went, I believe we have a good chance of winning the tournament.” The criticism leveled upon Gareth Southgate is ludicrous. It’s nonsense. People believe he should be chastised for failing to lead a side to the latest Nations League final. Of course, you want to win games when you enter a tournament.
But Gareth has completely transformed what it’s like to be with England.”
Young was named to Qatar’s 55-man provisional squad but was ultimately left off the final roster.
The Three Lions’ World Cup campaign kicks out on November 21 against Iran, and Maguire will be hoping for a start from Southgate.
