Kalvin Phillips has provided a fitness report ahead of England’s World Cup selection announcement, with the Manchester City star hoping to be included.
It appeared at one point that an injury nightmare might derail a hardworking midfielder’s international hopes as the countdown to FIFA’s flagship event in Qatar continued. Phillips had shoulder surgery in September and has not played for the club since, but the 26-year-old is nearing full recovery and might force his way into Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad traveling to the Middle East.
“The shoulder is absolutely fine now,” Phillips told BBC Radio 5 Live. I’ve been healing as quickly as possible for the World Cup for the past seven weeks. Everything is going swimmingly. I haven’t done it in a long time, but I’ve maintained my fitness up and would like to think I could play 90 minutes.”
When asked if he felt ready to return to England after starring for the Three Lions in their run to the Euro 2020 final, Phillips said, “[Following surgery], I went to Gareth and told him about my condition.” I explained that I understood if he didn’t choose me, but he reassured me that ‘as long as you’re healthy enough and show you’re progressing well, there’s always a chance you’ll get called up.’ I’ve done everything I can to stay in shape, and maybe I’ll be able to participate.”
Phillips is likely to play in City’s Carabao Cup third-round match against Chelsea on Wednesday, with an opportunity to impress in what will be his fourth appearance for the reigning Premier League champions following a £45 million ($52 million) summer deal from Leeds.
