Commercial drivers in the Ashanti region’s Effiduase have begun a two-day strike to protest high fuel prices for their operations.
The drivers grounded all vehicles at bus terminals, leaving commuters stranded.
Since the beginning of the year, one of the most common complaints from drivers has been an increase in fuel prices.
As of November 1, the price of diesel had risen to GH23.49 per litre, while petrol was selling for GH17.99 per litre.
Effiduase drivers protested the excessive increase in fuel prices by refusing to work on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Michael Owusu, a station driver, stated that the demonstration was held to express their dissatisfaction with how quickly fuel prices have risen.
According to Kwame Nsiah, president of the drivers’ association, rising diesel and gasoline prices do not correspond to rising transportation fares.
The drivers had planned a three-day protest to express their displeasure with the government.
Osei Adiyiah, the District Chief Executive for Sekyere East, has intervened.
He pleaded with drivers to assist commuters in obtaining vehicles for their daily activities.
The drivers are expected to return to work on Thursday.
