After two weeks of competition in a variety of sports disciplines, the 2022 Commonwealth Games will come to a finish on Monday, August 8, 2022.
The athletes from Ghana eventually joined the celebration in the last week, even though they were a little late to the party to win any gold. At the Games in Birmingham, Ghana sent a total of 126 participants and coaches across a variety of sports.
Athletics, Badminton, Boxing, Beach Volleyball, Cycling (Road Race), Field Hockey, Judo, Table Tennis, Triathlon, Para-Cycling, Weightlifting, and Squash were among the events they participated in. As a result of these individuals’ five medal victories, the nation has now won 62 medals overall at the Commonwealth Games since the Games’ start in 1954.
Abraham Mensah, Joseph Commey, and Abdul Wahid Omar all won silver medals in boxing to give Ghana its first three medals of the competition. Despite dropping the final against Dylan James Eagleson of Northern Ireland, Mensah was awarded a silver medal in the bantamweight category.
Joseph Paul Amoah won bronze in the 200-meter final, placing third with an amazing time of 20.49 seconds. Commey also had to accept a silver medal in the featherweight competition after being forced to withdraw from his final match against Jude Gallagher due to illness. For the bronze medal, Wahid Omar defeated Louis Richamo Collin in the light welterweight semifinals.
The national 200-meter record holder so became the first Ghanaian since George Daniels in 1974 to take home a medal in the 200-meter event. Long jumper Deborah Acquah, who finished third in the final with a leap of 6.94m, completed Ghana’s medalists with a bronze medal.
