Sprinter Benjamin Azamati from Ghana won his heat to go to the 100-meter semifinals of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
After clocking a mark of 10.19 seconds in Heat 7, the 24-year-old took first place, beating out Jeremiah Azu of Wales. Azamati had a slow start to the race but rallied in the middle and outperformed his rivals by the finish line.
Following a fourth-place performance in his heat, Sean Sarfo Antwi of Ghana has also qualified for the semifinals. The 31-year-old sprinter finished with a time of 10.33 seconds after competing in one of the most intense heats. On Wednesday, when the semifinals and championship matches are set, both Azamati and Sarfo Antwi will be in play once more.
Following a string of unsuccessful performances at the Games in Birmingham, Team Ghana is relieved by the success of the pairs. The men’s hockey team from Ghana suffered a humiliating loss on Sunday at the Games at the hands of India, who dominated. As they cruised to a decisive 11-0 victory against their African opponents, the Asian titans looked to be strolling. The Black Sticks were hoping to have a stronger performance on Sunday after losing their first game to England, who destroyed them 6-0.
But after they were pummeled by a spirited Indian team, their chances of moving on to the next round took a further hit. In addition to losing 5-0 in their other game, Ghana’s women’s hockey team also fell to England 12-0. Abeiku Jackson, who competed earlier on Tuesday, placed sixth in the men’s 100m butterfly semi-finals with a timing of 53.79 seconds, but he was unable to advance to the final.
