Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, a former speaker of the Ghanaian parliament, has cited the spread of foreign television shows as a major cause for concern. He claims that numerous TV stations are airing these telenovelas at the expense of Ghanaian programming. He said that the local language telenovelas make him ill and denounced the practice.Speaking during Okyenhene Ba D. Jones Akwasi Amoako Atta Ofori- inaugural Atta’s memorial lecture at the University of Ghana, Legon, Ocquaye urged the Ghanaian film industry to create films that would help the country’s development by promoting its culture.
He spoke “I implore our performers and writers to produce Ghanaian movies.
Every time I hear Twi or Ga language shoved through European or Asian lips, I feel nauseous.”
“The practise should be slopped if we should develop as a people… these are the things that unmake a nation.”It can never happen in Malaysia. It can never happen in India. It can never happen in any of the Asian countries,” he added.
